I didn't realize that theories could be applied to clothing until I read 'Fashion & the Self'. As CT majors, the motivations for dressing are interesting and practical ideas to look into as we can all relate to it and at the same time, apply it in the future when it's our turn to provide dresses for different kinds of people.
Most of the points in the article suggest that people dress to attract other people. My initial reaction to this was disagreement, I'm not dressing up to attract guys. But I realized that it does not necessarily mean 'trying to attract guys or possible partners', but also to attract or please other women. Sometimes, getting the approval of fellow females is more satisfying. I, for one, find it more flattering when a girl compliments me.
I also learned this week that the term 'clothing' is not limited to the garments one wears, but it encompasses everything we obtain and attact to or wear on our bodies. Garments, accessories, and grooming are all parts of the clothing. Yes, braces and contact lenses included.
